Area volleyball teams envision making playoffs as district starts

In recent years, the volleyball aspirations at Ellison didn't amount to much.

"We just wanted to win a game," joked junior Megan McKinnon.

But this year, the Lady Eagles believe they are ready to take that next step.

"The feeling is we're ready," junior Alayshia Hunter said."... I think this Friday's game (against Temple) is the start to show everybody 'We're ready, so watch out,'"

After combining for just five district wins over the last two seasons, the Lady Eagles (12-10) will open District 12-5A play with playoffs on their minds when they take on the Tem-Cats at 5:30 p.m.

Player of the Week: Secody Howard

Despite still nursing a sore ankle, Lampasas junior fullback Secody Howard has nevertheless got the job done.

Rushing 55 times for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns, Howard's workman-like approach has been pivotal to the Badgers' 2-0 start to the season.

But it was his play in a 37-34 overtime victory over Austin Travis last Friday — rushing 33 times for 114 yards and three scores — that earned him the nod as the KDHpressbox.com Player of the Week for Aug. 29 through Sept. 4.
