Blackcats holdoff Gatesville

GATESVILLE — Doug Gentry caught one touchdown pass and ran for two, including a game-sealing 30-yarder with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter to give Mexia a 28-25 road win over Gatesville.

Gentry had a one-yard run in the second quarter and a 71-yard pass from D.J. Weathers in the third quarter that put the Blackcats up 21-12 to start the fourth.

Gatesville's Jake Truss threw two touchdown passes to Nardi Meyers in the fourth, the second of which came with 1:03 left in the game from 1-yard away. Meyers caught a 7-yard touchdown pass with 5:22 left in the fourth that cut Mexia's lead to 21-18.

Kevin Clarke scored on a 2-yard run in the first to put Gatesville up 6-0 before Mexia's 14-point second quarter.

Truss completed 15 of 24 passes for 142 yards with two interceptions and the Hornets totalled 182 yards on the ground, led by Clarke's 95 yards on 13 carries.

Gentry ran for 101 yards and had two catches for 79.

 

Vista Ridge picks off Knights

CEDAR PARK — It was feast or famine for the Harker Heights offense as four second-quarter turnovers — including three interceptions — proved to be the difference as Cedar Park Vista Ridge pulled out a 31-21 victory Friday night.

"The first half was just awful," second-year Knights coach Mike Mullins said.

Starting the second game of his prep career under center, Heights junior quarterback C.J. Rodriguez finished the evening with a career-high 277 yards on 14-of-24 passing but four costly interceptions.
