State champ Abilene escapes Belton

SAN ANTONIO — Belton coach Rodney Southern isn't much for moral victories.

But, even after watching talented cousins Herschel and Ronnell Sims lead No. 2 ranked Abilene to a 36-27 victory over his Tigers in their Texas Football Classic showcase game Friday in the Alamodome, Southern found a silver lining.

"In a game like this, I never thought for a minute we'd come in and shut them guys down, you just need to be hanging around and in the end, you have to score and do what we did," Southern said. "... I'm not a moral victory guy, but I think our team grew up tonight."

Fast-starting Buffaloes hold on for 41-25 victory

FLORENCE — Florence fixed it.

Whatever was going on, whether it was just fighting through first-game fatigue, inexperience on defense or the loss of perhaps its most explosive player in the second quarter, Florence found out a way to fix its mid-game problems.

And just in time.

After jumping out to a 28-0 lead thanks to three scores from Michael Ramirez, the Buffaloes held off Bruceville-Eddy's rally Friday and defeated the Eagles 41-25 at Stampede Stadium.
