Although the ceremony was postponed until next week to accommodate several football teammates, Marcus Kehoe couldn’t wait another day to make it official — he was a Division I athlete.

Privately signing and faxing a national letter of intent to pole vault at North Texas, the Lampasas senior joined the National Signing Day congregation on Wednesday. “As a kid, you always have that goal to become a Division I athlete, and growing up I always thought that was going to be in football for me,” said Kehoe, who rushed for 1,141 yards and 16 touchdowns this past season. “But I still ended up getting the chance to compete at the Division I level, and that’s what it came to. That’s the kind of competition I want to be apart of.”

Kehoe finished with the fourth-best height (15-feet) at the 3A state track and field meet last May, a mere six inches from reaching the medal stand.

Ultimately choosing the Mean Green over UT-San Antonio, Kehoe said he was most impressed by the caliber of coaching at UNT.

“Derek Mackel jumped 13-feet in high school and went to college and jumped 18-1 — he’s somebody that’s got a tenacious mentality and wants to be the best,” Kehoe said. “That’s definitely something I want to associate with.”
