Gatesville head boys basketball coach Brian Edwards has been suspended with pay until Monday and did not lead the Hornets in their game Friday at West.
Gatesville Independent School District superintendent Stewart Speer said Friday the situation was “handled through the school internally.”
“This was an internal situation that was not brought forward by a student, a parent or a community member,” Speer said. “He’s been suspended until Monday.”

Gatesville is 16-11 overall, rebounding from a 4-8 start when the Hornets were decimated by injuries. The Hornets improved to 7-0 in District 7-3A and are in line to make their fourth consecutive playoff appearance.
Speer did not disclose details on the incident, as it is a “personnel issue” he said. He went on to say he didn’t anticipate any further action.
“We’re going to move forward,” he said. “It’s done, it’s over. We’re finished.”
Varsity assistant coach Chris Carroll assumed the head coaching duties for Friday’s game. The Hornets beat West 51-34 to stay atop 7-3A.
Edwards is a 1990 Gatesville graduate who has led the Hornets to the postseason in six of the last seven seasons. Gateville finished 28-7 last season, reaching the 3A region quarterfinals for the second time in five years (2005) under Edwards. The Hornets were 28-5 in 2007-08 and reached the area round.
This is the second incident involving Edwards over the last three seasons. During the 2007-08 season, Edwards was accused of verbally abusing a former player, who was kicked off the team for undisclosed reasons and did not return to the team when given the chance.
Edwards denied the abuse.
A Level 3 grievance was filed with the Gatesville school board, which recommended anger management. Gatesville High School reprimanded Edwards on the first grievance (Level 1) and it was upheld by then-superintendent Rick Copp (Level 2).
