Why she won: Desiree Nelson won Player of the Week for the second time, receiving 206 votes and 56.7 percent of the voting. She trailed Killeen’s Ta’Shawn Thomas late Tuesday, but surpassed the Runnin’ Roos standout Wednesday to claim the weekly honor.

Nelson, a four-year letterman for the Lady Bulldawgs, scored 28 points in Cove’s regular-season finale, a 70-55 win overA&M Consolidated on Feb. 9. Cove’s season ended Tuesday in the playoff’s first round, as Nelson, the team’s top scorer this year, led the Lady Dawgs with 10 points against DeSoto.
What head coach Richard Herbst said: “... I just thought that was one of her more complete games as far as passing the ball. And especially when (A&M Consolidated post Karla) Gilbert came off of her drives, she made some nice passes to Shina (McCoun). It was really a complete game against a McDonald’s All-American. That’s pretty nice.”

On what she meant to the team: “For us to be successful ... Being able to score and being able to pass and take care of the ball. She really had a lot to carry on her shoulders. Most of the time when the pressure increases, the shooting percentages go down. She kept increasing them even with teams doing that to her. That’s a real good sign of a player that matures and develops.”
