Knights win Wolf Pack Classic

The play didn't start well for Harker Heights, but it ended with a championship.

A near pickoff led to the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, while Irvin Santamaria came through for the second consecutive day, hitting a two-run triple as the Knights went on to beat Burnet 5-3 in the Wolf Pack Classic baseball tournament championship at Shoemaker.

Harker Heights, which lost 13-2 to Argyle Liberty Christian during pool play Thursday, ended the tournament with three straight wins, including a win over the Warriors on Friday in the semifinals.

"You can say it's just another tournament game when you're just playing a game," said Heights coach Glenn Cunningham, whose Knights improve to 6-3. "But being under the gun and playing for a championship, you're playing for something. You're playing for some pride and a chance to bring a first-place trophy home.

"That's why you go out and play."

And as both Cunningham and Santamaria said afterward, it's games like the final Saturday that the Knights can use in preparing for the District 12-5A schedule.

"It really helps experience-wise," the junior said. "I just hope we can back it up the whole season and not just ride this."

Wildcat Relays: Ellison boys run to 2nd straight win

TEMPLE – For the third time in as many weeks, the Ellison Eagles ran with a different 800-meter relay team. This one, though, was no experiment.

The last time Michael Bryan and Prezel Hardy teamed with Brian Dawkins and Larry Brooks, the quartet won gold at the UIL state track championships. Back together Saturday in the Wildcat Relays in Temple, they won again, giving the Eagles their first 800 relay win this season and second consecutive meet championship.

"It's a reunion. It feels good. I'm just glad we finally got to run with them," said Hardy,. "I don't know if we'll run with the same relay next week, but just to run with them (Saturday), and get the time that we did, it's real good."

Hardy, Brooks and Nieto Hall finished 1-2-3 in the 200 meters, paced by Hardy's 20.95-second time and the Eagles won the 1,600 relay to pull away from Belton and win the overall meet by almost 30 points.

The same 800 relay team that ran a 1:25.66 and won gold in Austin last June, won Saturday in 1:25.34 with just a week's worth of practicing together.
